In our walk with God one most character we must exude is wisdom. Wisdom is the principal thing. When a person has wisdom it does not matter his or her family background, educational background, etc. he or she will make it in life. But more importantly, if we are going to be Christ’s ambassadors in culture and re-present Him to the world around us, then we must passionately pursue and prioritise wisdom, just as He did. This means that we need to move from conduct to character because it is our thinking that controls our doing—and when Christians begin to see godliness as more than moral living, we will become even greater Christian witnesses. The Bible emphasises that one of the greatest qualities we can possess is wisdom. The books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are replete with timeless advice, especially about the importance of wisdom. King Solomon, for instance, with all his magnificent wealth and possessions, understood the value of wisdom: “For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her” (Proverbs 8:11). He also stated, “How much better to get wisdom than gold!” (Proverbs 16:16). It would be difficult to convince the many who embrace the materialistic ways of our society that they should believe King Solomon! Because wisdom helps us to understand the difference between what is right and wrong in God’s sight, acquiring and exercising wisdom will lead to happiness and longevity of life (Proverbs 3:13-16). It is an important spiritual quality God wants to see in us.
To understand wisdom transcends dictionary meanings. The Dictionary would normally define wisdom as the quality of having experience, knowledge, good judgement, or the quality of being wise; this definition makes us only understand wisdom from a theoretical point of view. The true meaning and understanding of meaning is grounded in the Bible, the reason it is important for anyone who wants be wise to consult it. The Lord in His infinite glory still founded the earth by wisdom. The ability of God to create the universe and everything in it is not just in words but predominantly by wisdom. Wisdom is very important to our Creator. God as a matter of fact speaks wisdom as a language and there’s nowhere on earth this language isn’t heard. So if your life will get better as a Christian you first must receive wisdom and receive it from above.
THE FOUR DIMENSIONS OF WISDOM
The Spiritual dimension – Psalm 111:10
The fear of the Lord is the doorway to wisdom. You can not fully operate in wisdom if you don’t fear God. To fear the Lord is firstly to turn away from sin and everything that’s not right and secondly to have respect for God. The day you gave your life to Christ is the day that you walk through doorstep of wisdom. It actually takes wisdom to even accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour.
The Mental Dimension
This has to do with having a deeper understanding or insight of how life operates. Mental dimension does not have anything to do with high intelligence or mental IQ but how you observe things and take instructions from them.
Moral Dimension
The ability to differentiate right from wrong. This is often inspired by spiritual wisdom and often exhibited by people who are law abiding. Such people are not corrupt, vulgar, etc. In every society people who live morally upright are respected whereas those who don’t are pointed fingers at.
The Practical Dimension
This is the technical aspect of wisdom and it is the ability to use one’s creativity to solve problems. All around us in the world there are problems that require our creativity to put lasting solutions to them. It is our practical wisdom that leads us to discoveries, inventions, etc. So you’ve no right to be hungry because you’ve no formal job, look around there are a lot of problems around you that need solutions. Get your mind around them and find the solutions to them.
Governmental Dimension
A collective aspect of wisdom but has to do more with ruling in fairness and equity not only in order. It has to do more with how we manage our homes to benefit society at large. It again has to do more with how parents train their young and generation thereafter how to be useful citizens in the societies they find themselves in. It is highly believed that a nation prospers depending on the kind of governmental wisdom that is at display in the homes of its individual members.
IMPORTANCE OF WISDOM
- God created the world through wisdom. Proverbs 3:19-20. If wisdom is important to God the creator then it is equally important to the creature. If the Creator used wisdom to create then the creature needs it too to survive.
- Wisdom is the principal thing. Wisdom will teach you what books will not teach you.
- Wisdom is a builder – Proverbs 24:3. People who are wise are builders, they can pick things from the scratch and make something glorious out of it. If you’ve wisdom there’s no way you’ll exit the earth without a house of your own. When you’ve wisdom you don’t waste money.
- Wisdom makes you strong. Proverbs 24:5. When there are circumstances it is wisdom that will keep you strong. It doesn’t mean that you will not cry or shed tears but it simply means you will not break down even in your most difficult times.
